Like many people, I have lost friends to suicide, and I haven't seen a correlation between stoicism and tragedy.
So, it concerns me that the causes of suicide, i.e. family breakdown, insecure and unpleasant work, and trauma, receive so little attention, and I sympathise with those who dismiss RU OK Day as tokenistic and disingenuous.
At the same time, it is a positive thing that so many organisations are committed to marking the day and prompting us all to connect with those around us and start meaningful conversations. Reminding us that we don't need to be experts and that the conversations that might make a difference are straightforward.
So, on September 12 and not just on September 12, Here's how to have a conversation that could change a life:
1 Ask R U, OK? – Reach out and check in with those around you.
2 Listen – Give them your full attention and listen with empathy.
3 Encourage Action – Support them in steps to improve their situation.
4 Check-In – Follow up to show you care and offer ongoing support.
